IP Telephony VoIP Broadband Latest Post Last Posts Archives Previous Post Is proprietary iPhone video player on the way Exclusive iPhone DevCamp s Raven on iPhone SDK and what it means Posted in News BlackBerry Apple Just a few minutes ago I had a most enlightening email conversation with someone who knows as much about the new iPhone SDK and its effects potential as anyone who doesn t work at Apple. And probably know more than most who do. That d be Raven Zachary who you may know as key force behind the iPhone DevCamp group and grin from SF event in pic as well as an analyst and perhaps THE key thought leader in the third party iPhone developer community. Raven had some thoughts on the new iPhone SDK. I know you are here because you want to know what he thinks. Comin at ya RS Your overarching thoughts on SDK is it what you hoped for in terms of flexibility ease of use etc RZ This is what the development community was hoping for a platform that allowed developers to build na! tive applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. In terms of openness it looks to be something in between what Apple does today with the iPod Games market and the Mac. Developers can write almost anything but will need to distribute the software through the iTunes App Store with Apple taking a revenue share for distribution billing and marketing basically. Developers wanting to distribute free applications through the App Store will be allowed to do so as well. RS How does SDK functionality change the game for party iPhone devs RZ rd party development for the iPhone up until now was web based through Safari and a small number of people in the hacker community working on unofficial apps. We re now going to see an entire new market created around native applications and providing functionality not possible through web development. You ll see iPhone development for web based applications just not exclusively. RS Are you troubled by the Apple control issue i.e. they reserve rig! ht of approval RZ No because it seems that Apple will only limit this in extreme situations. Steve Jobs was quoted in the Q A session with the media that they would even allow VOIP applications although limited to Wifi and not over the carrier network. What we don t have here is Apple review of all source code which would have been time consuming and expensive. RS In SDK what s cool RZ Everything pretty much. Apple has provided a large sandbox for developers while still providing for data security. RS In SDK what s missing that ought to be there RZ There are still a number of unanswered questions from today s announcement such as hardware and peripheral connectivity but these will be answered by Apple in time. RS Any other thoughts RZ Don t underestimate this market and the disruption on RIM BlackBerry . Prosecutor Man Had Torture Thoughts Before Killing Friend KGTV San Diego

A South Bay man consumed with thoughts of torture killed and butchered a transient friend then dumped his body parts all over San Diego County a prosecutor said Thursday. Authorities said they did not know why Gerald Nash killed Allen Hawes cutting off his head hands and legs but speculated that it could have been because of a dispute or the defendant was trying to create a new identity or because Nash enjoyed it prosecutor Kristen Spieler said in her opening statement of trial. Defense attorney Troy Britt told the jury there was no direct evidence that Nash shot the year old victim in the head then used a saw to cut off his body parts and scatter them throughout the county. Nobody s going to come up and say I saw that happen Britt said in his opening statement. You re not going to get that kind of evidence. But Spieler told the jury that Nash appeared nervous when police questioned him about Hawes who was known to stop by the Egger Highlands adult video store where the defe! ndant worked the graveyard shift. Hawes known by some as Backpack Al because he always carried a backpack stopped coming by the Ever So Naughty store when Nash quit in December Spieler said. The victim s torso was found about a mile from the store on Feb. in the Otay River bed in Palm City. Hawes head was found inside a bag the next morning along Interstate and th Street the prosecutor said. Within an hour of that discovery a Caltrans worker found a human hand near southbound and the Interstate split Spieler said. Nash was arrested on March . Five weeks later in April two very badly decomposed legs were found in Harbison Canyon in East County the prosecutor said. When detectives went to Nash s home located behind the adult store they searched the trunk of one of his three cars and found a blade from a saw and red duct tape similar to tape found near the torso Spieler said. Another of Nash s cars had trash bags covering the seats and a van belonging to the defendant had a bl! each bottle and a reddish brown stain similar to blood nearby the prosecutor said. Police found the victim s backpack in Nash s storage unit when the defendant took them there Spieler told the jury. Nash told police he last went to the unit in early February and records show he had been there Feb. the prosecutor said. Nash disappeared Feb. after being questioned about his friend s disappearance Spieler said. The defendant s roommate told a detective that he saw Nash take bag of the trash out to the dumpster before he left. In the dumpster next to Nash s residence detectives found pages of handwritten notes referencing murder and dismemberment the prosecutor said. Words like disposal cutting time wash the saw drop site and test ropes appeared in the notes Spieler told jurors. With this I could retire one of the notes read. Get the wallet above all read another. Police also found plastic drink bottles that had been modified to be used as home made silencers the prosecutor said. Pieces of wet carpeting with red brownish stains that looked like bl! ood with a strong smell of bleach were also found in the dumpster Spieler said. After Nash was arrested police found three weapons including a . revolver with ammunition in the trunk of car he had bought after police initially questioned him the prosecutor said. Fragments from a test fire on the gun matched bullet fragments taken from the victim s brain Spieler said. The victim s blood was found in Nash s van and on gloves in the dumpster and Hawes DNA was discovered in a hole on the saw blade even though the blade itself had been wiped clean the prosecutor said. Spieler said a middle fingernail was missing from one of the victim s hands and investigators from the medical examiner s office claimed it couldn t have been an accident. The prosecutor said Nash had notes on methods of disposing a body including burning and leaving it for wild animals. But Britt countered there would be no evidence presented that Nash dismembered his friend and that doing so would be a messy chor! e. The attorney said no witnesses will testify that they saw Nash driving around San Diego County throwing body parts out the window of his car. He said all of the body parts were found in heavily traveled areas except for the legs. Nash had no motive to kill Hawes Britt said. He said the defendant gave the victim money and a place to stay. They were friends Britt said. Mr. Nash was helping Mr. Hawes and helped him for seven years. Mr. Nash went out of his way to help his friend. The attorney said there wouldn t be enough evidence to prove Nash chopped up his friend and threw him out in the garbage like a piece of human refuse a piece of trash. Nash who is charged with murder and personally discharging a firearm faces years to life in prison if convicted. My XBox 360 Repair Adventures Sending it to get fixed

About a week ago my xbox got the dreaded red ring of death. I called microsoft support and got the extended warranty. Then they said they were sending me my box to send it in. To my amazement my box got here in days Only days I was thrilled. So I sent it the following monday. I checked the tracking info on the UPS site and it has arrived in Mesquite Texas where it is being fixed in only days. Thus I m very pleased with the UPS people they got my box to me and back to Texas in only business week. I m guesstimating that it will arrive back here in Nevada next Wednesday. But Ill Keep you guys updated with my any other news about the travel adventures. The new capability which will be called Intel Anti Theft Technology is to be added to Intel s Active Management Technology part of Centrino vPro and allows IT managers to remotely access and configure computers. Microsoft Acts on DataPortability

Today Microsoft takes another big step towards Data Portability by announcing their Contacts API for their Live Platform . To quote John Richards Director of Live Platform an active participant in the DataPortability project from the press release To tackle the issue of contact data portability it is important to reconcile the larger issue of data ownership. Who owns the data like email addresses in a Windows Live Hotmail address book We firmly believe that we are simply stewards of customers data and that customers should be able to choose how they control and share their data. We think customers should be able to share their data in the most safe and secure way possible but historically this openness has been achieved largely through a mechanism called screen scraping which unduly puts customers at risk for phishing attacks identity fraud and spam. Now with the Windows Live Contacts API we have provided an alternative to screen scraping that is equally open but unequivocal! ly safer and more secure for customers. This is another strong example of how committed Microsoft is to data portability in general and the DataPortability project specifically. As things take shape in the DataPortability Project we will have specific recommendations for Microsoft and all other vendors to make sure that their APIs are seamlessly inter operable with other DataPortability enabled applications.
