Directed by Mike Newell. At Bay Area theaters. Small but nagging problems drag it down such as weird acting choices bizarre casting and strange aging makeup. The principal actors start off playing characters younger than themselves and then advance to playing characters much older. That s to be expected. But something in the combination of the actors and their ages is consistently off. Both are in their s. Florentino a telegram delivery boy takes one look at Fermina and falls madly passionately and deliriously in love. But to see this from the outside it just looks like a kid has become obsessed with a woman. Maybe she doesn t like Bardem s looks. Maybe she liked the other actor better. In any case she rejects him which sets Florentino on a many decades long quest. He gives Florentino a stoop so that he walks around like Groucho Marx half the movie. Such nagging imprecisions could be called minor but they re distracting. There s no opportunity for an e! motional response. The film only becomes affecting when Mezzogiorno moves front and center in the movie s last section. She becomes the no nonsense carrier of the story. This year old actress does it with no gimmicks and no Groucho walk. Advisory Nudity simulated sex and strong language. E mail Mick LaSalle at mlasallesfchronicle. I can't be bothered with anything recently. Today was a complete loss, but I guess it doesn't bother me. Oh well. Not much on my mind today. Maybe tomorrow.
